Optical
Drive And Its Types (CD, DVD, BRD):
An
optical drive uses lasers to read data on the optical media. It is made of polycarbonate
plastic. The concept of CD was co-developed by Philips and Sony in 1982. The
first CD was created on 17 August 1982 at the workshop of Philips in Germany.
There
are three types of optical drives:
1.
Compact disc (CD)
2.
Digital versatile disc (DVD)
3.
Blu-ray disc (BD)
1.
CD,
DVD, and BD media can be pre-recorded (read only), recordable (write once), or
rerecordable (read and write multiple times). CDs have a data storage capacity
of approximately 700 MB.
2.
DVDs
have a data storage capacity of approximately 4.7 GB on a single-layer disc,
and approximately 8.5 GB on a dual-layer disc.
3.
BDs
have a storage capacity of 25 GB on a single-layer disc, and 50 GB on a
dual-layer disc.
There
are several types of optical media:
1.
CD-ROM - CD read-only memory media that is
pre-recorded
2.
CD-R - CD recordable media that can be recorded one
time
3.
CD-RW
- CD rewritable media that can be recorded, erased, and re-recorded
4.
DVD-ROM - DVD read-only memory media that is
pre-recorded
5.
DVD-RAM - DVD RAM media that can be recorded,
erased, and re-recorded
6.
DVD+/-R - DVD recordable media that can be
recorded one time
7.
DVD+/-RW - DVD rewritable media that can be
recorded, erased, and re-recorded
8.
BD-ROM - Blu-ray read-only media that is pre-recorded
with movies, games, or software
9.
BD-R - Blu-ray recordable media that can
record high-definition (HD) video and PC data
10.
storage
one time
11.
BD-RE - Blu-ray rewritable format for HD video
